While I think it was silly to close for the whole day Thursday (Isabel didn't hit until evening, guys...), it was sensible for the government to close on Friday. We slept in, because the hurricane was still hanging around for a while overnight & during the morning, but after it blew off North and West, we got up and braved the post-apocalyptic world to get coffee (hey, I have my priorities!), and to get the other Neopet doorhangers an online friend wanted. We figured we'd go to Montgomery Mall, since all of the other ones we'd been to didn't have the one we needed...
We had no flooding in this area -- I didn't expect we would, since we
are in the foothills. But, as we had suspected, the major problem in this area was the fallen trees -- and boy did they fall... In the town where
barbary_coast lives, they must have had a microburst, or one of those nifty hurricane-attending tornadoes, because they looked like they'd been nuked. Trees down all over, and power out, too. She had no power, and ended up packing for an overnight stay with family in Annapolis (they live on high ground, so no canoeing to get there, luckily!).
Where we live, we still had power, but from the reports, we were the last bastion of civilization in the world. Odd, since we nearly always lose power... But, of course, cable was gone. Damned Comcast... I missed the season start of Boston Public, and they never rerun those... Most of the other stuff I had to miss was rerun later, but still, a royal pain. And I couldn't see the local news to see if there was any info on the immediate area, or work, or anything like that...
Anyway, we had to drop off the comforter to get it washed & dried (too big for the apartment machines), then get coffee, then go to the mall to look for Neopets. And drive around to look at the damage, because we're not only weather-geeks, we're also weather-freaks...
When we tried to get drive through Old Towne to the laundromat, the main road was blocked. There are a number of lovely old houses they zoned as businesses, but because they're in the old part of town, they also have lovely old trees. BIG, lovely old trees. At
least one of them had come down and was blocking the road... Tried to go around another way, and the little windy road that goes to the bridge over the tracks was also blocked -- at
least one
humongous tree was down across that, and we knew they'd have a hell of a time getting it out -- there's no way to get big trucks in to haul anything away, because of the windyness of the road and the terrain it's on...Time for the chainsaws, guys... One of the other big lovely houses next to the tracks had a
HUGE tree leaning up against it -- I don't think they had any serious structural damage, but they must have at least some roof damage. ::sigh::
After going around the long way, we dropped off the comforter and headed on for coffee. No problems there, luckily. Once that was done, it was off to the mall. That's when we started finding out how lucky we actually were in our apartments! There were trees down all over, and lots and lots of traffic lights out. It seemed like every major intersection was dead. Lots of them had small stop signs tacked up on saw horses or barrels, but some didn't even have that. And the folks in this area just DO NOT get the concept of a 4-way stop. People kept trying to barrel on through, not bothering to think that everyone there was in the same situation as them... Sheesh.
barbary_coast's area had lots of trees down and lots of power outages, our area had lots of trees down and some outages, and the area we were going to seemed to have few trees down and lots more outages. I'd love to see a detailed map of the areas struck & the wind speeds...
Anyway, we made it to the mall, and decided to look for the Neopets TCG, too. Found a game store, and found some cool Samurai Jack action figures, but no Neopets TCG. Then we went to the Limited Too, and they have a
huge store! They had all of the Neopets we needed, so we picked those up for our friends, and got the one we'd been missing. (Sorry,
barbary_coast, no Disco Aisha there, either. We're still hoping...)
After that, it was back to our area, and the dead blue screen. ::sigh::
We took a nap (I love sleeping...), then got up and made dinner, got online, etc. I made some more artwork, then worked on my CLFF story that I need to get done by 10/10...
And then I crossed my fingers that cable would be back on Saturday and set the dead-tapes for all of the Saturday morning 'toons, and we crashed.
Saturday morning, we woke up and the power was off. This was kinda odd since it had been working when we went to sleep... =:O I figure it must have been that they shut it off so that they could move some of the downed wires without killing themselves, because it wasn't off for long. I got up to reset the timers on the dead-tapes, and found out that cable still wasn't back. No 'toons. Unfortunately, all the ones I missed were ones they're not going to be rerunning. ::sigh:: If it had been the evening Cartoon Network ones, we coulda grabbed them on the reruns.
Anyway, back to sleep until about 2:30 (we're nocturnal -- can't help it... the
second there's any long-term break from the normal day-to-day work schedule, we both go nocturnal automatically...), then we got up and went over to
barbary_coast's place to see if her power was back. Lots more oohing and aahing over downed trees, then we got there and tried turning on lights. At first, we didn't see any change, then my roomie realized the ceiling fan was running. So, we called her and told her it was safe to come home.
From there, we headed out for more shopping fun! We hit Target in the Land of Giant Stores, and got a pillow, and a voice-operated Neopet for the son of our online friend, and DVD's... Lots of DVD's... And
really cute Halloween stuff!
After Target (and we forgot the booze store, so I have no Bombay Sapphire right now. A crime!) we went to Dream Wizards, because we figured if anyone had the Neopets TCG, they would.
Yeah, they did. They also had a
Stargate SG-1 RPG book, a
Farscape RPG book, some more In Nomine sourcebooks, anime DVD's, etc. etc. etc. We both spent
far more than we should have. And I need to get more booster packs for the Neopets TCG, because we're missing a bunch of the cards! Don't have any idea how to play the game yet, but I want 'em all!!
After that, we went to Whole Foods to get dinner, and again spent more than we should have. Lots of yummy juices (Pom Wonderful pomegranate juices! Yum!), dinner, etc. And then when we got home, we had to lug it all back upstairs. Ooogh...
But at least the cable came back. I was going to tape SWII, but it kept glitching -- they didn't get it completely fixed until sometime Sunday. But at least I could see the news! Luckily, we hadn't been under any kind of boil orders, so we're not going to die from horrible sewage-carried diseases or anything like that...
All in all, it wasn't a terrible weekend for us. We were really lucky as far as the power went, and luckily none of the big trees in our direct area came down. I think all of the weak ones were culled by the previous storms we'd had with the 80 mph gusts...
And now, I'm back at work. Ew. :P When we leave today, I have to mail a huge box of Neopets booty off to our online friend!
